What Response Did You Expect?

Have you ever been shocked at someone's response to Biblical truth, or the presentation of the Gospel? Or have you ever been surprised that our world has fallen so far away from the Truth found in the Word of God? I certainly have!

In my early years as a believer, I was dumbfounded that people would willingly fight Biblical truth. How could an army of people stand up to defend, and even celebrate the right to kill an unborn human? How could the nations rejoice in the sexualization of children, and the planned and designed installation of homosexual normality (even within the church)? I couldn't wrap my mind around it.

But as I grew up, I began to realize something that is rooted in scripture, and that's that we should expect no response from darkness, other than darkness. What I mean by that is that a person that hates Truth and loves their sin will act accordingly, react accordingly, and live accordingly. There are no grounds for expectation from a believer for the unbelieving world to be held according the God's standard. It simply does not exist. I know this for 2 reasons, though there are probably many more found in the Word of God.

Reason 1: They Love Darkness

3 verses after the most popular and well known verse of the Bible is John 3:19.

And this is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light; for their deeds were evil.

Here is a valuable life lesson that has kept me from being shocked, hurt or insulted by an unbeliever. The Biblical truth is that they simply love darkness. Jesus came into the world, but rather than running to the light, the unbeliever runs to the darkness, where their sin stays concealed and hidden. Jesus says in Luke 8:16 that one that has Christ is not to hide the light under a bowl, but rather to let the light shine, thus exposing the darkness.

So when I see people advocating for laws that contradict God's word, or feel no conviction for their sin, or respond poorly to the Good News, it's simply because God's Word, His Truth, and the proclamation of those things is shining light into the darkness that they hide in - and that's our job. We are to be beacons in a dark world.

Reason 2: They Are Not At Peace With God

Another way of understanding this is that the unbeliever is not at peace with God, but in active rebellion. The believer is justified by his faith and therefor is at peace with God (Romans 5:1), while the unbeliever is not justified by his faith and therefor is at war with God. We know from Romans 1 that all humans know God, some simply suppress the Truth in unrighteousness. They love their sin, hate God's authority, idolize themselves and worship their own life. So when presented with God's truth, not only does it shine light in darkness like we previously read, but it also is the Word of the enemy to the unbeliever. The propaganda of the other side - the manual for the opposite. It simply does not make sense, which is why it takes a supernatural work of God for a person's heart to be softened to embrace the Gospel, repent of their sin and carry their cross.

Self idolatry is a great place to be if it weren't for Romans 14:12, which says that we will all give an account to God for our lives. What will your account be? Did you call people from darkness to light? Did you point to the innate knowledge of a creator hidden in the unbelievers rebellion? Or did you hide the truth under a bowl, keeping the light of Christ to yourself for none to see? I pray for you, and myself, the former.
